Near Yoshiwara Omon Crossing, in 1-chome Nihonzutumi, there are two old but excellent wooden buildings.
These buildings are a tempura restaurant called Dote no Iseya (土手の伊勢屋) and a horse meat restaurant called Nakae (中江). Dote no Iseya was established in 1890 and Nakae was established in 1905. These buildings were rebuilt after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, so these buildings have more than 90 years of history.
Dote no Iseya is popular for a bowl rice topped with tempura and is a well-known restaurant that has been featured on television many times. It is open from 11:30 to 14:00, but it is often sold out before about 13:30.
Nakae is famous for horse meat hot pot (sakura nabe, 桜鍋). There are sushi, sashimi (raw horse meat), and steaks of horse meat. Although prices are high, horse meat tastes great!
In its golden age, there seem to have been about 20 horse meat restaurants around Yoshiwara. It is said that some visitors who wanted to have fun in Yoshiwara sold their horses to get money and merchants began horse meat restaurants with those horses. Horse meat hot pot became a prevalent gourmet dish of Yoshiwara and there was a custom of eating horse meat to get energy before having fun in Yoshiwara. Nowadays, there are only two horse meat restaurants in Yoshiwara, Nakae and Atsumiya (あつみや).
Near Nakae there is a butcher specializing in horse meat called Chibaya (千葉屋). This butcher sells horse meat not only in Yoshiwara, but also to restaurants around Tokyo.
This shop sells various kinds of horse meat, such as raw meat, meat for sukiyaki, hamburger steaks and horse oil. Horse oil is said to be a cure for many things, especially for burns.
