There is a self built house in Mita and its self builder is called “Gaudi in Mita”.
There are wonderful self built constructions, like Le Palais idéal (Ideal Palace) in France built by Fernand Cheval and Watts Towers in the U.S. built by Simon Rodia. In Japan Sawada Mansion in Kochi prefecture is famous for being a self build construction. There is also a self buid house in Tokyo.
It is in the Mita district in Minato ward, a quiet residential are , 8 minutes from Tamachi or Mita Sotations. On the way to climb Hijirizaka slope, in front of Friends School, the strange shape of the building is under construction sandwiched on both sides of the apartment. This building is self-built architecture and was built with the hands of only one architect.
Since 2005 he has been building this three story house alone. It is very rare to build a house freely in Tokyo because the architecture laws are too strict in Japan.
On the day we visited, there was one man who continued to work silently on a building under construction. He is Keisuke Oka (岡啓輔) nicknamed “Gaudi in Mita”. At first he scheduled to build this house in three years, but 9 years have passed. It is still under construction and no one can predict the day this house will be completed.
This building is named “Arimasuton Building (蟻鱒鳶ル)”. This building gets its great durability by reducing the amount of water in the concrete and increasing the density of the cement. Although ordinary concrete keeps for 30 years, this building is said to keep for more than 200 years.
Materials used in the construction of the building have been procured from DIY stores. Let’s go there to check this building out and wonder when it will be completed.
The place where this house is being built has been applied to the re-development site, so this house also has the possibility of being evicted. But he cannot quit self-build architecture. Uniform buildings with no originality are lined in Tokyo, so this unique house shows the fun side of architecture.
Sawada Mansion (沢田マンション) : Sawada Mansion, located in a suburb of Kochi, is a six story apartment which the Kanou Sawada family built by themselves. Offspring of the builder live in and rent to travelers as guesthouses.
