Shin-Okubo is a famous Korean town. There are many Korean restaurants, Korean grocery stores, and Korean idol goods shops. But there are also many Chinese restaurants and grocery stores. Shin-Okubo is also a China town.
When you go west of Shin-Okubo Station, you may notice signs written in Chinese characters surrounded by Japanese and Korean characters. There are many Chinese restaurants, grocery stores, and internet cafes.
This grocery store, called Yokojo (陽光城), sells Chinese ingredients and has branches in Ikebukuro, Yokohama, Kawasaki, and Kamata.
This restaurant, called Xiao Wei Yang (小尾羊, Little Lamb), is a Mongolian hot pot and BBQ chain.
There is a Chinese restaurant called Senriko (千里香). This restaurant serves Yanbian dishes. Yanbian (延辺) is located in China, just north of the border with North Korea, and most residents of that area are Koreans.
Yanbian’s famous foods are spicy lamb skewers and dog hot pot.
A restaurant called Enjishan (延吉香) just east of Shin-Okubo Station is also a Yanbian restaurant and serves dog hot pot.
Next to Senriko, there is an eatery called Xiao Wei Ya Bo (小魏鴨脖). This shop serves spicy duck neck, which is famous in Wuhan (武漢), China.
Around Okubo Station, there are many Chinese restaurants. Masobyo Temple (媽祖廟), where Taiwanese worship, is also near the station.
In Shin-Okubo, there are many Chinese people and restaurants. They are from many Chinese places, including mainland China and Taiwan. These days, the Korean boom has decreased, and Chinese tourists are increasing. Shin-Okubo is a famous Korean town now, but it might become famous as a China town in the future.
